Night had finally fallen upon them once again, as they slowed to a creeping pace through the wood. The party didn't want to stop for fear of losing progress. The Moon was high and not yet full, shining upon them at this rate did nothing to help the expedition. The tees were too high and too thick, the moon was not bright enough, and bears had terrible eyesight. Or at Least... Ursa did.
The Former Queen traveled with four others. Her mother, her Mother's Personal guardsman, a bannerman, and Her eldest uncle. On Route from the Region of Wildgard to Healing Waters, a Bear Country far north where the Frontier and it's evil had no reach. They Had been on foot the entire way, and for nearly Seven days. Luckily they had carried very little other than their most precious possessions and a few hard-to-hunt provisions, Staying in human form meant they would take slightly longer, but it was much easier to traverse the wilderness in Human form with sleek and slender bodies.
Ursa's Mother wore thin leathers trimmed in grey rabbit fur, warm and flexible. She looked to the sky as the trees passed over head. A misplaced foot caused her to stumble momentarily. Ursa's quick Reflexes caught her and they stabilized eachother. "Are you Alright?" Ursa asked, concern filling her voice. "Mother we need to stop. It's nonsense to carry on much later tonight." Ursa's leathers creaked as she shifted her feet in the soft soil. "What do you think, should we make camp?"
Mother Dauntless nodded slowly in reluctance, staying herself on the nearest tree as Ursa stepped back and turned to the men. "You Three, We need to find level ground. My mother, your Lady, needs rest." Slowly she took an Arrow from the Quiver on her Hip and with the slightest amount of focus, the tip ignited. Using the Flaming Arrow as a guide for light, she nodded to the Bannerman, a wizard, to do the same. Instead he used the very palm of his left hand to do so. A vicious fireball awakening in his hand. The two of them went in separate directions to seek suitable shelter and the Guardsman set out to patrol the area. Leaving Ursa's Uncle with her Mother. Whom Huffed and found his way to her side.
"Why don't we travel by firelight? it provides enough vision for us to navigate these woods. Easily." He said, sliding down the tree nearest on his back, hitting the ground with a soft flump. He swung over a satchel and began to rummage though it as the Lady rolled her eyes.
"Because Gilbert. The Fire gives away our Position. Leaves us vulnerable in a vast flammable forest." She replied pointedly.
"They Have fire with them now, what's the difference? They've already given away our Position. If there were any souls out here in the first place..."
She shot a firm glance at him. "Come Brother, Don't tell me you're afraid of the Dark..." She smiled at him. "Get some rest then. The Darkness behind your eyelids is much darker than the night."
Gilbert grunted, finally retrieving a cloth-wrapped snack from his satchel. Food to cease the bickering. Together they sat in silence looking out into the woods waiting for any sign of the Scout and Wizard. Mother Dauntless spoke up again after a few minutes. "What are your skills then? eating all your food and complaining?" She grinned, trying to use her humor to warm her. Gilbert glared and huffed again. "I'm an Assassin." he said. "I don't have any fancy fire tricks."
"So Killing people is your specialty?"
"Aye, what about you?"
The Woman smiled weakly. "I'm a Healer. By Profession."
"Profession eh? Well It's a good thing we brought you along." he chuckled.
"It's My campaign!" She laughed, booting him lightly in play.
Her brother nodded and bit into a hunk of dried meat, tearing off a chunk. He chewed for a minute and opened his mouth full of food to speak. "Why did you leave the Ursus Dauntamontis?" He asked, "I thought your Husband was king."
Just then, they stopped talking, a Strange buzzing sound caught her attention just in time to have a long arrow streak past her face and burst through the tree next to her. She dove to the ground and flung herself onto her back. Gilbert nearly choked and threw himself behind the tree he had been leaning on, frantically struggling to stuff his food back into his satchel and drawing his sword at the same time. More arrows whizzed by, snapping any branches they came into contact with. There was shouting and battle cries in the distance, and then, the sound of a Bear's Roar.
"Was that Harrison?!" she asked Gilbert, tugging at a Small dagger sheathed at her boot.
"How the hell am I supposed to know?!" He snapped. Peering into the dark woods from behind the tree.
"HARRISON!" She cried out to her Guardsman.
"Shut it!" Gilbert Growled. "You wanna talk about giving our position away?"
Mother Dauntless propped herself up against a fallen log and rolled over to get a better look. A brilliant steak of lightning lit up the forest about sixty feet away. She could make out several fighters for a split second and then all was dark again. "URSA!" She called out. "HARRISON!"
The Battle had sprung out of nowhere, Mother Dauntless was right, the Fire had attracted outsiders to their presence. And it only took a moment to single them out and attack. Ursa was ambushed on either side by small thin Humanoids dressed in dark tattered clothing. They wielded thin black bladed weapons and Made no sounds when they sprung out of the woods. The Scout was able to draw her bow and fire the flame arrow, igniting one of the assailants almost immediately; though her eyesight had her doomed before she had even begun. She spun around and nocked another arrow... hesitating. 'I can't see. I'll miss my shot and lose valuable arrows...' She thought, She flung her bow back over her shoulder and put the arrow away, a shaky hand found the hilt of her sword and a sudden force collided with her. She hit the ground pinned beneath an unseen bandit, kicking and fighting him, eyes wide in fear. "HARRISON!" She cried, only to hear her mother voice calling out for the same man. The Bandit Brought a sword to her throat and began to press, she grabbed him by the elbows and tried to force him off of her, the sting of the blade against her skin and the warm trickle of blood down to her collar bone striking panic in her heart. The Sound of feet thundering toward her was nearly enough to take her mind off of the sting, it was the Wizard. A strong roar and bolt of Lighting lit up the area and blasted the man off of her torso and rolling into the grass a few feet away. Ursa sprang up from the ground, Blade drawn and back to the Wizard. "Where's the Guardsman!?" She asked him.
"Hopefully doing what he does best your Grace."
Ursa threw her head in the direction of where she left her mother. 'I hope his reputation lives up to the task.' She thought, gritting her teeth.
The Scout and Wizard kicked off from the ground and bolted in the direction of the party, though the Bandits blocked their path. There were Four of them. And Five of us... An even Match in Theory, but Ursa had never been too great with a sword.
Mother Dauntless and Her brother were pinned down, Arrows volleyed in the forest, coming down on them in all directions, or so it seemed in Darkness.
"We need to MOVE!" She shouted at Gilbert, "We need to regroup it's our Only chance!" She Crawled over the Log in front of her, in the Direction that Ursa had left and found her leather boot covers pinned to it. "I- I'm Stuck!"
"Wait come back!" Her brother yelped.
"Kill People!"She yelled at him, Taking her dagger and slicing off the Arrows fletching to free herself.
She sprung off of the ground and directly into one of the bandits. He had heard her panicked feet too late and toppled to the ground under her weight. The older Woman sank a dagger into his heart, pulled herself off of the forest floor and sprinted through the wood.
