Rook had her hands clasped together as she stared into a stein, feeling the steam rising from it lick at her face. A lot had changed in a short amount of time for her - most importantly, her winter-proofed wardrobe as opposed to her scantily-clad ways of the past. She had her cloak pulled about her, covering herself as a blanket would be used in order to keep in her body heat. There was so much noise in the tavern tonight, it was bustling with all kinds of entertainment and dancing, and whoops and hollers, and shady, unheard conversations that would be a lip-reader's curious dream. But Rook had no interest in eavesdropping tonight. She was not there to take advantage of anyone - she had left that behind her. She clothed herself honestly, which was a first for her in years. While she waited for Starfire to join her at a table adjacent to the door, Rook a deep breath, and settled into the soft fabric draped across her body. The proud smile that squirmed onto her face assured her that there indeed was a life beyond thievery.

Starfire walked into the tavern, the cold air coming in with her. She hated the cold and it was everywhere, there was no getting rid of it until the snow melted. Her cloak was wrapped around her the cold had seemed to freeze bits of her hair but it seemed that entering the tavern meant it slowly started melting. Star turned her head and saw Rook sitting at a table by herself. Star knew she wanted to meet up with her but she was afraid. She hadn't actually talked to Rook since the incident.
She sighed and pulled down her hood as she began to walk over to the table. Star's bruise's that were around her neck were no longer visible but the pain still lingered. "Hello Rook, Nice to uh, see you again." She said before she pulled out the chair at the table and sat down.

Rook looked up at Starfire and gave a small, awkward smile. Turning her eyes toward the barkeep, she quietly spoke. "Hey. How are you, uh... feeling?" She stammered a bit. "I-I'm fine, y'know, if you're wondering. I'm okay." Letting out a nervous laugh, she took a sip from her stein. A few butterflies flew about her stomach as she began talking again. "Do you want me to get you something to drink? Are you hungry at all?"

"I don't need anything." Starfire's voice was quiet, everything was well, awkward. Everything that had happened in the church seemed so unreal. "I'm fine. My throats sore but I'm really sorry for what happened. That wasn't me and I feel terrible. I wish that never happened." Star took off her cloak and awkwardly placed it off the side. "Lately, I haven't been able to think nor confront anyone. I'm not allowed to carry a weapon anymore and i'd rather not carry one around. But i'm truly sorry."

"As you wish," Rook said, continuing to sip at her drink. Her eyes trailed to Star's neck, and her expression turned grim. "Don't be sorry... I knew it wasn't you who did that..."
Unlike Star, Rook felt no lingering pain from her stab wound. Thistle did a good job of fixing that up. She reached her hand out in empathy, placing it on one of Star's, knowing well the pain, shame, guilt and frustration of having no control of your own actions. "You needn't apologize. It couldn't be helped. Anyway, look, I'm fine!" She grinned with her teeth. "What doesn't kill me makes me stronger, and I need all of that I can get, being a mere human and all." She returned her hand to her own side of the table, and propped her head up with it. With her other hand, she traced the well-worn lines of the table. "How long have you been with the church, Starfire? I want to be as helpful there as I can, but I'm not sure how. I owe you all my life, twice over. If you need anything, please let me know..." Rook trailed off, realizing how abnormal her previous way of life had been. She never had to work for anything. She used sly, twisted, promiscuous or violent tactics to get whatever she wanted for over five years now. But now that Drethiel was no longer a part of her, she felt a wonderful freedom and pride in every honest thing she did. It was like a way of redeeming herself. "I'll do anything, as long as it doesn't involve taking things that aren't mine." It was as if any thought or act of theft by her now came full circle with hideous karma.

Feeling Rooks hand on her cold one showed that she did care and somewhat understood. The fact that Rook had gone through somewhat of the same thing made it a bit easier for Star to talk to her. Once the subject was slightly changed onto the church a flash back of home reappeared in her mind, it wasn't the best one either. "Oh, um, the church. Well I haven't been involved long, but Thistle had the idea after I became a Half-Demon to be his spy on things. I'd bring him information about the plane and what it was like, bring him there every once in a while and hten we decided that maybe I should work for the church. Long story short, I was being used in the beginning, or at least, I felt I was."
Taking a deep breath Star remembered back to when she had just started in the lands of Wildgard, A new life. "At first when I got here, I hated the church, I wanted to burn it down. I had plans to burn it down. All the information hidden in there gone. But I never got to doing it. I always had a side problem that had to be dealt with... But I had reason for why I wanted the church gone." Starfire looked down a her hands, the painful memories coming back. The torture she went through just to be where she is today. "But that's a long story. No need getting into detail."

Rook narrowed her eyes at the table as she listened to Starfire speak, mindlessly studying the pattern of the table underneath her hand. "I see..." she murmured softly. "It's fine if you don't go to detail. But please realize I'm willing to listen to you. Everyone needs someone to listen to their story." She slowly got up, and downed the rest of her drink. "I'm going back to get another. I know you said you didn't want anything, but you look like you could use something warm to comfort your soul." Not even waiting to hear a thank-you or protest, she strode off to the bar, and ordered two ciders, handing the barkeep a small handful of coins. She felt a small pang in her stomach, spending the last of the coin she had on her for the time being. I need to learn to give. Give, don't take. Earn, don't steal. Rook carefully carried the two filled steins back to the table and set them down on either side. Sliding into her seat, her mind only trailed for a minute back to her previous belongings... the ones she had hidden from everyone. Her collection of goods and coin that in itself would be enough to clothe, feed and house her for her lifetime. What would she do with it now?
Lifting the stein to her lips, Rook took a sip and flinched lightly, realizing she burnt her tongue. "I've got all night, Starfire, and nothing better to do. So what do you say? Would you feel more comfortable if I told you about myself, first?"

Before Star could add in word Rook was gone. "What soul?" She murmured to herself as she fiddled with her hands picking at the fabric on her hands. Letting out a sigh as the stein was placed in front of her she just stared at it absentmindedly. Her mind was set on the past and only the past but why now, why right here? Star shook her head focusing back on Rook. "Sorry, oh, uh, yeah, if you don't mind sharing. I should also mention that I now work here and have nothing better to do and me just sitting here with a 'customer' means I get paid." She nodded her head lightly with a light smile on her face. It was odd, a smile. It had been a while since she actually had a reason to...smile. Her hands wrapped around the stein and she slowly picked it up and had a tiny sip attempting not to burn herself.

"Very well. Then let me tell you a bit about myself, Star." Rook smirked and blew on her drink this time before sipping it. As the drink warmed her up, she started from the beginning.
"I was always a curious child, you see. But I lead a fairly normal childhood life, growing up with my mom." She made a curved motion around her neck with her finger. "Do you remember that pendant I used to wear? It belonged to my aunt, or so I thought..." She scowled, remembering how she threw it to the ground in the Basilica, destroying her last link that Drethiel had with her. "It was because I was so stupid... no, so naive... I found that thing, clearly hidden and stored away under my aunt's bed. I was taken aback by its beauty at the time, and made off with it." She took another sip of her drink, and stared down at the table. "Little did I know that it was one of Drethiel's sin-plagued relics. My aunt and uncle were good with spells, you see, and they knew of its dangerous power. The way it was hidden, they sealed it away with a powerful ward. When my aunt found it had disappeared, it's safe to say she lost it. She went on rambling about me staying safe and pure..."
"The way she died was odd, too... shortly after all that, she committed suicide. Turns out Dreth had possessed her as well, marked up her legs many years before that." Rook grimaced at the memory. "My aunt cut those markings out herself, while she was living. She must have died of blood loss or something..." She sniffed and looked up at Starfire with eyes that had grown slightly weary. The guilt she felt about her past pained her, and it was difficult to talk about it, knowing she could have prevented it all if she didn't steal in the first place. "Sorry, I'm rambling. Long story short, my Aunt was trying to disable the pendant's dangerous properties, but became possessed by Dreth in the process. She had a lot more willpower and magic on her side than I did. When she cut out the symbols, his bond to her was broken... and I imagine he ended up taking her soul before he went off to find me, the new pendant-holder."
"The story from then on consists of me being influenced by him, as you know. My thieving habits got worse and worse, and my means to get what I wanted grew so drastic that I turned into a murderous thief, not just an everyday pickpocket." She sipped her cider thoughtfully, then continued. "But don't fear. Similarly to your situation, it wasn't really all my doing, it was mainly his icy, chiding voice in my head. My story ends with Wildgard, here, where I met you, and Thistle and Des... where I was finally freed from that dreadful angel and my uncontrollable greed."
She smiled up at Star, and then looked at their surroundings carefully, checking to make sure no one was eavesdropping. "There is something, though... something that I'm not sure how to deal with." Rook fiddled with her hands as she said the last portion of her sentence. "All the treasure, money...pracically everything of value I ever stole in that span of years... it remains hidden in a place that only I know. I don't know what to do with it. Part of me fears ever going near it again, and part of me feels it's not right to just leave it be after all this time." Breathing out a sigh, Rook took a long swig of her drink. "Giving it away feels wrong, as it's not mine to give. Keeping it for myself feels wrong, because... well, it's not really mine in the end. Starfire, what would you do in my situation? I mean should I have fun with it, leave mysterious treasure maps everywhere for people to find it on their own?" She laughed nervously to herself, trying to make light of it all.
"Anyway, that's all I really have to tell you. Now, what was this long, detailed story that you were going to tell me?" She waited intently for Starfire to speak.

Star nodded her head watching Rook as she spoke. "That's honestly terrible. I can only imagine what it was like." She stiffened up when Rook told her it was her turn to explain. She hesitated to say anything but knew that she needed to. "Well, um. My past is a touchy topic because it honestly wasn't that long ago." Star took a deep breath everything sorta rushing back to her. Over the last year, there was so much that happened.
"The reason why I wanted the church gone was because of what had happened back in Magrathea, my home. I grew up in Magrathea with my mother and my father but my mother had died when I was very young. I honestly don't remember much about her.But I knew that she was an elf and our parts of our family grew up here in Wildgard and actually Lady K is my part of my family." She sighed slightly annoyed at that fact.
"My father on the other had was a great man, he taught me everything I needed to know about hunting and living on my own but once I was old enough to be considered grown up I fell in love. His name....It was Alexander, Alex for short." She looked down in pain, her hands started to shake as she felt herself tearing up. "It was terrible. I loved Alex and I did things I never should have done, I regret everything. But my father had started to notice that I was picking up on Alex's' habits of kill for no reason and many other things and he tried to stop me before I had become corrupted. But it was too late." She stared at the cider in front of her, her heart began to race.
"I woke up one morning to find a note and my father gone. The note read that he was leaving and he was hoping he'd be back. But he wasn't sure. I knew immediately that he was going after Alex. I remember that day so well. Everything that happened. The position of the sun even. I went after my father and caught them mid battle but I interfered and I almost died, Alex had me, sword at my throat but my father stabbed him in the back and he rushed down to see if I was alright....before I knew it my father was dead...." A tear had escaped, the one thing she didn't want to happen.
"I'm sorry. I'm almost done. Now. The church. Ok. I left Magrathea and travel here to Wildgard met up with my uncle and I left again. To go and see what had happened and see how everyone was but once I got there someone noticed me and remembered who I was they blamed me for both deaths. I was taken to the church and they basically tortured me for months. I finally escaped and Alex had well." Star raised one of her hands to her head and pointed at her temple. "I honestly thought that every Church was the same but I guess they aren't..." She sighed again before raising the glass to her lips and took another sip.

During the time Starfire talked, Rook kept a sullen face. Having the one she loved killed in front of her, only to have him make her life a living hell by occupying her head... it sounded terrible. At least she didn't ever love Drethiel. Thank the gods above that she never loved Drethiel. That kind of pain would sear through the heart... having mixed feelings of hatred for your ex-lover, but remembering the times of love and passion before everything went haywire. Rook had never been in love in her lifetime - she merely feigned desire and interest to take advantage of the lusty. By the time Starfire finished her story, she was practically speechless, and on the verge of crying herself.
"I... I'm sorry. I don't know what to say." She managed. From her pocket she withdrew a handkerchief and gave it over to Star. "I hope your life is turning out better than it has been. Like I said, if you need me, I'm here. You are truly one of my first friends." She concluded sincerely.

Star put a hand up to protest the handkerchief. Slowly she laid her head down onto the table, the overwhelming thought of that on day, the last day with her father. She sat back up and looked Rook in the eyes. "I don't know where my life is going to go but I feel so lost. I mean as scouts aren't we supposed to be immune to all forms of it.It's stupid. I'm such a bitch i'm rude to everyone, that would explain why everyone hates me and why Thistle calls my useless. I'm not good at anything and i'm only bitchy cause I put my guard up I don't want to be hurt like before." She held signs of pain, she wanted to break down but she couldn't so anger was all she could use.
"I'm sorry. I-I didn't mean to lash out..." Star cowered her head and looked back at her stein, her posture relaxing from being so tense.

Rook awkwardly shrugged and put away her handkerchief, and watched Star put her head down. "H-hey... Starfire...we all get lost sometimes. Right now, I think you're doing fine. You're not in danger, are you? You're safe. You have a job... you have at least one friend." She smiled as best as she could. "Not everyone is out to hurt you..."
"It's alright." She answered, letting her know everything was okay. "It's rough talking about the past."

Star tried to put on a smile on her face but only succeeded with a small weak one. "Thanks Rook." She looked down at the table and grabbed her stein taking the final sip. "I mean that. I've never actually told anyone what happened. Thank you. Oh, in danger, not unless I travel to the demon plane and i've been doing that a lot more often because of the cold. I guess I don't have to do it again until I need to talk with Balthaz-" Star's eye's widened. "I shouldn't have said that."

Rook nodded, listening carefully, but stopped at the last word. She gave Star an inquisitive look, and shook her head lightly. "Balthaz...what? Who's that, some guy in the demon plane? Does he bring harm to you?" Her voice rose a little as she spoke. Balthaz. That doesn't sound right... how did that name end? "Starfire, what's his name?" Rook's concern showed through in her eyes. "You know, just in case anything happens to you when you go off to visit... and I can track him down and smack him upside the head!" She laughed it off as a bit of a joke, but she was admittedly worried.
