within a second of his finished words, Ashen pulled her son into an embrace, patting the back of his head. "you never failed me" ashen kissed the side of his head while holding him closer. "you never gave up on me, even when i gave up...that isn't failure...that's strength...strength when i needed it the most...and you gave it to me. there will be times i cant protect you...but we will never give up on each other, because that is when we fail. just because i died...doesn't mean i love you any less then i do now. please never doubt my love again, it will never change unless it is your sword in my back"
Ashen held him closely continuing to comfort him even as pain riddled her body. "i love you, my son" she whispered quietly next to his ear.

Jay silently sobbed while Ashen held him. She didn't hate him, wasn't ashamed. 'She's lying to you.' said Alex. Jay shook his head again, as he wrapped his arms around his mama. He refused to believe that Ashen was lying.

Ashen continued to hold him, even singing a song she would while he slept from time to time "just close your eyes~ the sun is going down~ youll be alright~ not one can hurt you now~ come morning light~ you and i will be safe~ and~ sound~" she hoped the song would calm him soon. though it was ok to Cry, she hated seeing her son so sad.

Jay's sobbing slowly became silent tears again as his mama sang to him and he looked at her with wide eyes. He knew someone had been singing to him but he hadn't known who. "You're the one who has been singing to me at night?" he asked in a rough voice hating how sore the sobbing had made his throat in such a short time. "Why? Had I been screaming in my sleep again? If so did they wake you? I'm sorry if they had" he rambled on. Alex had hated it when Jay's screams woke him.

"shhhh" Ashen shushed him calmly. "sometimes i hear you whimper in your sleep. sometimes you dont even make a sound..." she rested her chin on top of his head gently as she spoke letting it slide so her cheek rested instead. "i did it because i wanted to...because you are my son, and i love you....my love is unconditional..." Ashen moved to kiss his forehead agian. "im sure, if i was ill, you would take care of me wouldn't you? because i am your mother, and you love me and no other reason? so why cant i do the same if not more so." she continued to hold him close as she continued to coo and calm him.

"Of course I'd take care of you mama" he said as his tears also slowly stopped. he rubbed the remaining tears from his face before he apologized to her "I'm sorry I'm such a mess tonight" and he was. She should be focused on healing, not on comforting him.

"Nothing to worry about son, everyone needs a good a cry once and a while." She ruffled his hair slightly, then aided in wiping the tears from his face. Her movements where slow, still fighting the stiffed effect of her death.

Jay slightly flinched as Ashen touched his face, not just because her touch was cold but because of Alex's voice coming back. 'be careful she'll most likely hurt you. She says she's your mother and that she loves you but that didn't stop your birth mother from hurting you, after all, think of where that scar on your cheek came from. That had been quite a a harsh slap hadn't it, with one of her nails catching your skin.' he said to Jay.

Ashen looked at him confused. Withdrawing her hand, she knew that look. She herself make the same many times. "Are you alright? You flinched...I hope you don't think I'll hurt you. I know what it's like having a loved one hurt you....it's needless...and harsh"
ashen gaze drifted slightly but then she looked back at jay. "What's wrong son... Your acting strangely and I worry about you..."

'Don't you dare tell her about me' Alex whispered. "Your hand is cold mama... and..." he trailed off. Should he ignore Alex and tell her or listen? Taking a few moments to think, he decided to tell her. "You said that you love me because you my mother but my birth mother didn't love me. Alex reminded me of that" Jay told her before the name on his chest started burning causing him pain.

Sitting in the dark shadows half way up the staircase across the room, the drow quietly listened to the conversation going on by the fire. The light of the fire didn't quite reach him and it felt fitting that he would be left in shadows. Drawing his legs up to his chest, he leaned forward, burying his face in his knees.
He had awoken not long after Ashen had left the room, the lack of her presence making him worry. But hearing the private conversation only made him stop before interrupting. It wasn't that he didn't think they'd welcome him. It was Jay's words that stopped him in his tracks. The boy thought that he'd failed Ashen...that it had been his fault for not protecting her. 'no...' he thought bitterly to himself. 'It wasn't you who failed her...'
Keeping silent, he shut his eyes. He knew what Ashen would say to him. She already had whenever he confessed failure. But that didn't change what he knew in his heart. It had been his fault. And he didn't really deserve to be sitting at her side when she was with her family.

"Alex...now there's a familiar name...." Ashen questioned but then smiled "your 'mother' sounds to be a very... Sad person...good thing I am your mother now. I will try my best to show you what a proper or at least Loving mother is." Ashen continued to smile as she talked with jay. She pulled jay into another embrace, patting his hair gently.
As she continued to comfort jay, she could smell a familiar scent that hadn't introduced itself into the room yet. "You can come here and sit with me you know..." Ashen called out to Fallen, not knowing exactly where he was just that he was there.

Jay sat there in his mama's embrace too shocked to move. How had she heard Alex's name before? Had he called it out while stuck in one of his many dreams featuring Alex? Had she or someone she knew met him? Not to mention the fact that she still wanted to be his mother. When she called out to someone though he took a sniff of the air, also catching Fallen's scent. "Papa?" Jay whimpered.

The drow leaned against the wall and let out a sigh when she called to him. He kept forgetting that she could smell him a mile away. He contemplated for a moment not saying anything, or even slipping back up the stairs and leaving completely. But doing that risked her chasing after him and he didn't want that. She was still recovering and it sounded like the conversation she was having with Jay was important.
Raising his head from his knees he spoke from the shadows. "I just wanted to know that you were ok, not disturb your conversation." His words were quiet and sounded tired. He figured that he looked even worse with his hair disheveled and the deep lines of fatigue on his face.

"Your not it's alright, I'm sure you can come here if you want. You sound tired, at least it's warm by the fire." She stated as she felt a slight draft, reminding herself she have her blanket to Jay. She would have to return to the warmth of her bed soon, her circulation wasn't fully recovered.
"I think for now perhaps we where finishing?" She questioned jay as if to confirm. "It's been emotional for everyone it seems, I don't understand why...I'm easily replaced" ashen shrugged with one arm as the other still held jay loosely.
